Copycat Recipe: Starbucks Chocolate Cream Protein Cold Brew

Why You’ll Love It

This drink is Starbucks’ boldest entry into the protein line: a cold brew with thick chocolate cream that’s less about sweetness and more about intensity. It’s rich, bitter, filling, and delivers a protein punch. If you want a coffee that feels more like fuel than a treat, this one is for you.

Ingredients (1 serving)

½ cup cold brew concentrate (store-bought or homemade)

½ cup cold water (or to taste, depending on how strong you like it)

2 tbsp chocolate protein powder (unsweetened or lightly sweetened works best)

2 tbsp heavy cream (or half & half for lighter)

1 tsp cocoa powder (dark, unsweetened)

1 tsp maple syrup or honey (optional, to take the edge off bitterness)

Ice (enough to fill your glass)

Instructions

Make the chocolate cream base In a small cup or blender, combine the protein powder, heavy cream, cocoa powder, and optional sweetener.

Whisk or blend until smooth and thick. The protein will make it heavier than a typical cream — that’s exactly what gives it that Starbucks feel.

Prepare the cold brew

Fill a tall glass with ice.

Pour in the cold brew concentrate and cold water.

Add the chocolate protein cream

Spoon or slowly pour the chocolate protein cream over the top of the cold brew. Let it sink naturally — just like Starbucks, it won’t float prettily for long because of the protein density.

Stir or sip You can drink it as-is for the layered effect, or stir gently to mix the chocolate into the coffee for an intense, bitter-chocolate cold brew.

Tips for Success

Match the bitterness: Use dark roast cold brew and unsweetened cocoa if you want that strong, bitter Starbucks edge.

Adjust sweetness: If the original was too bitter for you, don’t be afraid to add a teaspoon of sweetener when making the cream. It balances things without making it a dessert.

Protein texture: For a thicker mouthfeel, choose whey or casein protein powder. Vegan proteins work too, but some can taste gritty — blending helps smooth that out.

Make it lighter: If you want something more drinkable, swap heavy cream for milk or oat milk — you’ll lose some of the thickness but gain smoothness.
