Review: Starbucks Sugar-Free Vanilla Protein Latte (Hot & Iced)

When Starbucks expanded their protein line, the Sugar-Free Vanilla Protein Latte was clearly meant to be the “approachable” one — a flavor most people can imagine before even sipping. I tried both the hot and iced versions, and while they’re very similar, there are some small but important differences.

First Impressions

Hot version: Looks like a classic latte, though it poured out foamy — almost more than I expected. That extra layer of froth makes it feel a little elevated compared to a regular latte. Iced version: Standard presentation, clean and creamy-looking. The ice makes it visually lighter but you can already see that the protein makes the liquid a little thicker than usual.

Flavor Notes

Both drinks lean closer to a traditional latte than a flavored specialty drink, which is actually surprising given the “sugar-free vanilla” label. The vanilla is subtle — present, but not aggressively sweet. The hot version lets that hint of vanilla shine more clearly, giving the coffee a smoother finish. The iced version mutes the vanilla a bit; it’s refreshing but the coffee flavor comes forward more.

Texture & Consistency

This is where the protein makes itself known. Hot latte: almost “custardy” in mouthfeel, like drinking a melted ice cream base — rich, creamy, and a little unusual if you’re expecting the lightness of a normal latte. Iced latte: works better with the thickness, since a cold drink naturally feels denser. Here it comes across as creamy rather than heavy.

Portion & Drinkability

Hot: A small is plenty; more feels like too much given the thickness. Iced: A medium feels perfect, especially if you want something filling without being overwhelming.

Would I Order Again?

Hot version: I wouldn’t go out of my way for it, but I also wouldn’t turn it down. It feels more like a novelty than a staple for me. Iced version: Yes — I could see myself working this into my rotation occasionally, especially if I wanted something that felt more substantial than a regular iced latte.

Who Should Try It?

Great for anyone who loves lattes but wants an added protein boost without sugar. If you’re new to the protein line, the iced vanilla latte is probably the most beginner-friendly option — mellow, drinkable, and not too different from what you’d expect.
