Copycat Krispy Kreme Apple Pie Doughnut

Meant to taste like apple pie, but often came across bitter or overly tart. The secret? Use a lightly spiced apple compote that feels like pie filling instead of canned jelly.

Ingredients (dough as above).

Apple Filling:

2 small apples, peeled & diced

2 tbsp brown sugar

½ tsp cinnamon

1 tbsp butter

1 tsp lemon juice

Pinch salt

Crumble Topping:

2 tbsp flour

1 tbsp butter, cold

1 tbsp brown sugar

Method:

Make dough and fry whole doughnuts.

Cook apples, sugar, cinnamon, butter, lemon juice, and salt until softened (8 min). Cool.

Make crumble: rub flour, butter, and sugar until coarse crumbs.

Bake at 350°F 10 min.

Inject apple filling into doughnuts.

Dip tops in glaze (powdered sugar + milk), sprinkle with crumble.

Tips:

Use Honeycrisp or Gala for balanced sweetness without bitterness.

Add a dash of nutmeg for “real pie” depth.
