Crumbl Review Cookies & Cream Tres Leches Cake

Light, chocolatey, chilled, perfectly soaked, and way better than I expected.

Crumbl doesn’t pull out cake slices very often, so when they do, the expectation is always pretty high — especially when the name includes both cookies & cream and tres leches. That combo alone feels like it could go either way: either an overly rich sugar bomb or a surprisingly balanced dessert. And honestly? This one leans very firmly into the second category. It’s one of the rare Crumbl desserts where the texture, flavour, and overall experience actually work better because it’s served cold and designed to be soft-soaked rather than structured.

The first thing I noticed is how clean it looks for a tres leches dessert. Traditionally, tres leches cakes look a little messy — a bit spongy, a bit glossy from the milk soak, maybe even a little uneven — but Crumbl presents theirs like a neat square of chocolate cloud. The top layer is smooth and pale with those tiny flecks of Oreo dust, the sides look nicely saturated but not soggy, and the whole thing feels very intentional, like you’re supposed to grab your fork and go straight in rather than trying to pick it up. Visually, it already sets your expectations that this isn’t a cookie — it’s literally a chilled dessert slice in cookie-sized packaging.

The flavour is where this one really surprised me. When you hear “cookies and cream” paired with a chocolate sponge soaked in three milks, you’d think the whole thing would read aggressively chocolate or overly sweet, but it’s actually the opposite: gentle, balanced, and shockingly easy to eat. The chocolate sponge is light and airy — almost like a genoise — which is exactly what a tres leches base should be. It absorbs the milk mixture really well without collapsing into mush. When you take a bite, you immediately feel the moisture, but the cake still holds structure. There’s no gumminess, no sludge at the bottom, nothing gritty… just a clean chocolatey softness that melts instantly.

One of the things I appreciated the most is that the chocolate here isn’t heavy. It doesn’t hit like a brownie or a fudge cake. It’s mild and silky, which leaves space for the milk mixture to come through. You can tell there’s a hint of chocolate mixed into the tres leches soak itself — not enough to make it a “chocolate milk cake,” but just enough to reinforce the whole cookies-and-cream theme without overpowering it. The soak almost tastes like a cold chocolate-infused sweet cream, and it keeps every bite cool and refreshing rather than dense.

Then you get to the topping — the signature part of anything “cookies & cream” — and this is where the whole dessert ties together. The top layer is light, creamy, and whipped to the perfect density. It’s not frosting, not buttercream, not Cool Whip — it’s more like a stabilized whipped cream with a slight cream cheese base. It adds richness without adding heaviness, and the Oreo crumbs inside it are incredibly fine, so you get flavour without chunks interrupting the texture. It’s honestly the smoothest cookies-and-cream topping I’ve had from Crumbl. You get that classic Oreo taste, but it comes through softly, like the aftertaste of a cookies-and-cream milkshake rather than the crunch of an Oreo cookie.

The real magic of this dessert is in how cold it is. Some Crumbl cookies improve when they’re warmed up. This? The colder it is, the better it tastes. Chilled, the textures stay distinct: the airy cake, the milky soak, the fluffy topping. If it warmed up, I think it would lose the clean separation and get too soft, so definitely keep it refrigerated until the last minute.

As for sweetness, this is one of those rare Crumbl releases that feels indulgent without being overwhelming. You could easily eat the whole slice without needing a glass of water or a break halfway through. The chocolate is mild, the milk soak is comforting, the topping is smooth, and the Oreo flavour is present but not harsh. It’s honestly one of the more balanced desserts they’ve put out this season.

If you like chocolate but don’t want something heavy…

If you like Oreo but don’t want something too crunchy…

If you like tres leches but want something a bit more playful…

This sits right in the middle of all three categories, in the best way.

Would I get it again? Absolutely. It’s not something I’d crave weekly the way I do with certain cookies, but as a specialty dessert drop, it’s easily one of Crumbl’s better cake releases. It’s gentle, soft, creamy, cold, and surprisingly refined for a brand that often goes bold and chaotic. This is the kind of item that makes you wish Crumbl did cakes more often.

If Crumbl ever brought it back, I’d reorder without hesitation — especially if I wanted something chilled, chocolatey, and comforting that doesn’t feel like you’re being hit in the face with sugar. Honestly? One of the quiet winners of the season.
