Copycat Krispy Kreme Cotton Candy Doughnut
The cotton candy doughnut was meant to capture the whimsical sweetness of a fairground treat. In reality, it leaned heavily on sweetness without much flavor depth. This copycat balances that sugary nostalgia with a soft doughnut base, fluffy pastel glaze, and just enough cotton candy essence to feel like you’re at the fair midway.
Ingredients (dough):
2 ¼ tsp instant yeast
¾ cup warm milk (100–110°F)
¼ cup granulated sugar
3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
1 egg
½ tsp salt
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
Glaze:
1 ½ cups powdered sugar
2–3 tbsp milk
½ tsp cotton candy extract (or a blend of strawberry + vanilla if you can’t find it)
Food coloring (pink or blue, or swirl both for fun)
Decoration:
Sprinkles (pastel, carnival-style)
Small tuft of real cotton candy (optional, for topping just before serving)
Method:
Mix yeast, warm milk, and sugar; rest 5 minutes until foamy.
Add butter, egg, salt, and flour.
Knead until smooth (8 minutes stand mixer).
Rise covered 1–1.5 hours until doubled.
Roll dough to ½-inch, cut into rings, let rise 30 minutes.
Fry at 350°F until golden (about 1 min per side). Drain well.
For glaze: whisk powdered sugar, milk, and cotton candy extract until smooth. Add coloring.
Dip doughnuts while still slightly warm. Sprinkle with pastel decorations.
(Optional) Place a tiny tuft of cotton candy on top immediately before serving — it melts quickly but gives a dramatic fair finish.
Tips:
Cotton candy extract is powerful — don’t overdo it; a little goes a long way. If you can’t find extract, mix strawberry + vanilla extract for a convincing “carnival sweet” note.
To make the glaze look more like the store version, use two bowls of glaze (pink and blue) and dip each doughnut halfway in both, letting the colors blend.
