McDonald’s Chicken Bacon Ranch Poutine review
Poutine is one of those comfort foods that’s hard to mess up but surprisingly easy to overcomplicate. McDonald’s decided to take the classic Canadian staple and level it up — or sideways — by building a full poutine-meets-salad-meets-loaded-fries mashup. The Chicken Bacon Ranch Poutine is exactly what it sounds like: their standard poutine base topped with crispy chicken pieces, bacon crumble, and a zigzag of ranch. It’s bold, it’s odd, and it’s definitely trying to be something new. But does it work? That’s the real question.
At first glance, it looks like a “why not?” kind of dish — the sort of thing someone creates at 1 a.m. when they can’t decide between fries, nuggets, or a McWrap. The bacon looks familiar and comforting, and the golden chicken pieces sit on top looking like they’ll bring crunch, texture, and something fresh to the mix. But once you dig in, things start behaving differently than you expect.
The base poutine itself tastes like… exactly what you already know. McDonald’s poutine is salty, saucy, and comforting in that fast-food way, but the gravy tends to soften everything quickly. Adding the chicken on top accelerates that moisture. The crispy chicken loses its crispiness fast — almost instantly — turning soft and spongey. It doesn’t ruin the dish, but it also doesn’t bring the satisfying crunch you might hope for. Instead, it becomes tender little nuggets of chicken that blend into the rest rather than standing out.
The bacon is the most successful add-on. It provides little bursts of salty, smoky flavour throughout, and honestly, if this had just been a “bacon ranch poutine,” it would have felt more natural. The chicken feels like an unnecessary extra step.
The ranch drizzle is what pushes this into experimental territory. Ranch and gravy are not flavours you’d normally pair, and the combination is definitely… different. The ranch softens the sharpness of the gravy and gives it a creamy tang, but it also makes the whole dish feel heavier. It somehow works in a weird way, but also feels like something you don’t need twice. It’s not bad — just unusual enough that once you’ve tried it, you’ve had the experience.
Flavour-wise, nothing is too strong or overwhelming. It’s a lot of soft textures layered together — soft fries, soft chicken, melty cheese, warm gravy, creamy ranch. You get the occasional bacon crunch, but overall the textures lean heavily toward mushy, and that’s what makes it a one-time novelty rather than a repeat order.
Is it fun to try? Yes.
Is it surprising? Also yes.
Is it something you’d commit to as a regular McDonald’s go-to? Probably not.
If you like loaded fries, experimental fast food combos, and trying limited-time items just for the experience, this one absolutely fits the bill. But if you’re looking for texture contrast, freshness, or something that makes you go “I need that again tomorrow,” it’s not going to hit that mark.
Final verdict: Worth trying once for the novelty, but most people won’t go back for seconds.
