Review: Starbucks Cheese Danish
The Starbucks Cheese Danish is one of those bakery case items that looks like a safe, cozy choice — golden pastry, a pool of cream cheese in the middle, very “grab this with your morning coffee and go.” But once you get into it, it doesn’t quite live up to the picture.
The first bite is all texture: soft, a little mushy, and not especially layered. Instead of that buttery, flaky pull you want from a danish, it leans more toward a generic soft pastry. It’s not dry, which is good, but it doesn’t really bring anything special either. It’s just… there.
The real issue is the filling. The cream cheese center comes in thick and heavy, and it completely takes over. You don’t get a gentle tang or light creaminess; you get a dense, slightly overwhelming block of cheese filling that bulldozes whatever the pastry is trying to do. If you’re someone who loves that ultra-thick cheesecake-style filling, you might not mind, but if you wanted a balanced bite of pastry and cream, it misses the mark.
Flavour-wise, it’s pretty simple: mild sweetness, basic cream cheese, not much else. There’s no extra spark — no vanilla, no hint of lemon, no interesting contrast. It doesn’t taste bad, it’s just flat. One or two bites in, you already know the whole story, and nothing really evolves after that.
As a snack, it’s filling enough. It’s not huge, but that dense filling makes it feel heavier than it looks. It could work if you just need something to hold you over and you really don’t want anything too sweet or too complex. But if you’re looking for something that feels a bit special or worthy of the seasonal lineup, this doesn’t get there.
Bottom Line:
The Cheese Danish is soft, simple, and surprisingly bland. The pastry doesn’t bring much to the table, and the cream cheese filling is thick enough to overpower everything else. If you already know you love heavy cream cheese pastries, you might enjoy it. For everyone else, it’s easy to skip in favour of something with more flavour and personality.
