Summer 2025 Fast Food & Treats Overview

Summer is always the busiest season for new drinks and frozen treats, and this year was no exception. From colorful limited-time drinks to playful blizzards and frozen quenchers, the big chains definitely leaned into sweet, cold, and fun. Here’s my full breakdown of how this year’s lineup stacked up.

Starbucks

Starbucks leaned into bright and layered flavors this summer. The Strawberry Matcha was surprisingly balanced and a great “starter matcha” drink. The Brown Sugar Strato hit that cozy-but-cool sweet spot — lighter than a latte but still smooth and flavorful. And the Salted Caramel Strato leaned more mocha than caramel, which was a surprise but ended up working. Meanwhile, the White Chocolate Macadamia Cold Brew felt like dessert in a cup, rich and creamy but still refreshing.

Overall: Starbucks gave a good mix of adventurous drinks and sweet comfort flavors, though the balance sometimes leaned heavier on sugar than coffee.

Tim Hortons

Tim’s went the playful route with their Frozen Quenchers — especially Orange Tangerine and Strawberry Watermelon, which hit that perfect slushy vibe. The iced versions felt weaker, but blended was a win. They also dropped a Marshmallow Cold Brew, which turned out to be one of the best cold brews I’ve ever had — sweet, creamy, and unmistakably marshmallow. The Double Stuffed Dream Cookie was a fun Oreo-style novelty but definitely a one-time thing.

Overall: Tim’s nailed the summer drink crowd with blended quenchers and surprised me with a legit standout cold brew.

McDonald’s

McDonald’s didn’t flood the menu with new summer items, but the few they released were memorable. The Vanilla Chai Frappe was smooth, refreshing, and carried that unique chai-meets-vanilla twist. The Pizza Pockets were saucy, gooey, and fun as a snack, while the Biscoff McFlurry was an easy crowd-pleaser — sweet, cookie-forward, and hard not to like.

Overall: McDonald’s kept it simple, but the small lineup worked.

Dairy Queen

DQ summer always means Blizzard season. Highlights included the Dipped Strawberry Cheesecake Blizzard (a strawberry-forward take on cheesecake), the S’mores Blizzard (which nailed the classic campfire taste), and the Cotton Candy Blizzard, which leaned super sweet and nostalgic. The Confetti Cake Blizzard felt like a sundae with sprinkles more than anything groundbreaking, but the Reese’s Caramel Craze Blizzard made up for it with its rich caramel-meets-peanut-butter balance.

Overall: Some hits, some misses, but the standouts — like S’mores and Reese’s Caramel Craze — are the ones I’d go back for again.

Booster Juice

Booster Juice went bright and tropical. The Strawberry Sunshine smoothie was simple but refreshing, while the Dragon Slay-ah packed a berry-forward punch with dragon fruit blended in. Both were natural, sweet without being overdone, and perfect hot-day choices.

Overall: Not as flashy as other chains, but clean flavors and very drinkable smoothies.

The Summer Takeaway

This summer lineup proved one thing: every chain wants to own the frozen treat category, but only a few really nailed it. Starbucks shined in variety, Tim’s surprised with their Marshmallow Cold Brew, DQ leaned on nostalgia, and Booster Juice kept it light and fresh. McDonald’s may have had the smallest lineup, but what they did bring was worth a try.

✨ Next week I’ll be sharing copycat recipes for some of these summer standouts so you can remake your favorites at home — and maybe even tweak them to your own taste.
